Enercast — at the moment it matters
Enercast  /  About

Pipeline intelligence for natural gas traders

Enercast is a real-time notification system that tracks 192 U.S. interstate natural gas pipelines and 17,100 meter points around the clock, and tells you when something that matters posts — a force majeure, a compressor outage, capacity going offline or coming back, a big change in scheduled flows.

Our Story

The enercast.com name has served the natural gas market since 2003, first as a source of daily market news, commentary, research and a trader message board. Today enercast.com is owned and operated by Ben Smith Consulting under founder Ben Smith, and is focused entirely on pipeline data: real-time critical notices and a daily supply & demand balance built from public pipeline postings.

From the founder

Ben Smith, founder of Enercast

I’ve been deep in natural gas data and fundamental analysis since 2003, when I founded First Enercast Financial. But it was my recent stint as a speculative trader for a private fund that led me to build Enercast.

As a trader, what I hated most was dealing with the pipeline notice feed itself: endless, unfiltered, and spread across bulletin boards. A routine scheduling post landed with the same weight as a force majeure. The notices that actually moved the market got buried, and when I did find one, it was often cryptic. Then came the real work of figuring out where the outage was, how much capacity was on the line, and whether there were reroute options. Pipeline information lacked transparency and was hard to get at.

So I built the tools I wished I’d had. Enercast scores and analyzes every notice for market impact the moment it posts, so the ones that matter stand out and the routine ones stay out of your way.

I also built it around a second frustration. Most pipeline data is modeled and grossed up into a national or regional estimate, which can mask the very constraints that move the market. Enercast works from the figures pipelines actually post, labels anything estimated as such, and alerts you to changes as they happen.

We show you what’s happening. You decide what it means.

What We Do

We scrape and monitor critical notices — force majeure declarations, capacity constraints, compressor outages, and maintenance alerts — across major U.S. interstate natural gas pipelines including Transco, El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG), ANR, Rockies Express, Tallgrass, Gulf South, NGPL, and others. Every notice is classified by event type, capacity impact (Bcf/d), likely market direction, and reroute potential, then delivered to subscribers within about two minutes of posting via email or Telegram.

We also collect each pipeline’s posted scheduled flows and operational capacity at more than 17,000 meter points and roll them up into PipeScrape, a daily U.S. natural gas supply & demand balance — production, LNG feedgas, Canadian imports, Mexican exports, LDC, end-user, power burn and storage — with location-level detail.

Enercast is a data and alerting service. All data comes from public pipeline postings; we are not affiliated with, and do not receive data directly from, any pipeline operator.
